We checked each platform in September 2026 using its public licensing terms, pricing information, and the features available to free users. We evaluated every site using the same six criteria, with one point awarded for each criterion.

  • Curated - whether humans actively select what enters the library, rather than simply reviewing contributor uploads for quality or policy compliance.

  • Commercial use - whether free images can be used in commercial projects.

  • No attribution required - whether free users can use images without crediting the creator or platform.

  • Full library access - whether free users can access the entire image library, with no paid-only images or collections.

  • Full-res download - whether free users can download images at their full available resolution.

  • Embed / Copy Image - whether the platform provides a built-in way to use images without downloading them, such as website embedding or copying an image directly.

AI-generated content is shown separately as a library characteristic and does not affect the Overall Score.

What makes it different

SiftStock gives Free users access to the entire library, with every image available in full resolution - no paid-only collections or reduced-quality versions. Website Embed and Copy Image are unlimited, don’t count toward the monthly download limit, and let users use images instantly without downloading the original file first.

The trade-off

Downloading images on SiftStock requires a free account. Attribution is also required on the Free plan: it must be added manually for downloads, while Website Embed and Copy Image include it automatically.

Best for

Users who want full access to every image in the library, in full resolution and for commercial use, with no paid-only images or collections - plus faster ways to use images through Website Embed and Copy Image.

2. Burst by Shopify

Burst is built around entrepreneurs and ecommerce, with photo collections created and curated specifically for online stores and business use. Shopify merchants can also browse and add Burst images directly from the Shopify theme editor.

The trade-off

Burst has a relatively small library of 20,000+ photos, which can limit the choice for specific or niche searches. The platform is also in maintenance mode and is no longer accepting new photo submissions.

Best for

Entrepreneurs, Shopify merchants, and small businesses looking for free commercial photography for online stores, product pages, marketing, and ecommerce.

The trade-off
